Spring Semester 2012
Meeting Minutes
Monday, April 9, 2012
Updates:
OFFICER ELECTIONS will be held at our meeting on MONDAY APRIL 23rd
We discussed limited roles and having more specific tasks for each officer.
If you're thinking about running or have questions/concerns, please contact one of the current officers (probably Emma or Mehera since they will be unbiased).
We also discussed having a different format for meetings next year. Maybe one for discussion about current issues and one for programming? That way hopefully more people could make it to each meeting. We're open to thoughts and suggestions!
Day of Silence has been tricky in the past so we're thinking of doing it differently this year.
Possibly more individual participation and less of a public event/display.
There's also a lot going on on Friday April 20 (which is the official national day).
HOWEVER if anyone is interested in tabling (Thursday and Friday) - please let us know!
- Book reading with Ev went well- great attendance!
- Justin replacement for an advisor next year is in progress... (stay tuned!)
- Gun Hill Road and everyoneisgay events have been postponed until next year...but FUNDRAISING needs to happen in order for us to pull that off. Start brainstorming!

Everett Maroon will be having a book reading and signing on April 4th! Please join us!
More info here: http://www.facebook.com/events/245628482193054/
Other upcoming events in April to stay tuned for: Day of Silence (April 20) and Imagine Festival (April 21)
Last piece of business... Mehera and Emma are working on coming up with a replacement advisor for Justin as he will not be with us next year :(

We went over final details for the Marriage Panel on Wednesday with Professors Farrington, Wilcox, and Lerman who are going to talk about marriage in their respective fields (Philosophy, Religion, and History)! We managed to get pizza there too! Everyone should come if at all possible.
A few dates for after spring break:
March 27th: Maureen Walsh, Walla Walla area representatve will be coming to Whitman and it would be awesome
April 14th: Same-sex hand-holding day! It's also Equality is Sexy day and FACE is enthused to do both on the same day and promote equality in all its forms.
April 20th is going to be our Day of Silence - we'll discuss plans for this more later.
Gun Hill Road is still up in the air, so we're probably going to be pushing it to next semester unless we hear back on it much earlier. Mehara and Luis are going to be working on emailing around for this.
There will be officer's elections after spring break, so think about it over spring break and see if you're interested in running for anything! We'll go over positions more later.
Next week's meeting we'll be watching the MTV Special "It Get's Better." (It's about 40 min) Everyone is welcome!
Have a great spring break everyone!

Debreif of Dragfest:
This year's attendance was lower than the past
We discussed a different location - maybe Reid coffeehouse (dances have been held there before)
We hope to have Drag Queens as performers/ MC's of sorts next year,
Evan knows some queens and will contact them
(the local-er the better - if anyone else knows of anyone please let us know!)
everyoneisgay.com update:
They will be touring the west coast NEXT Spring (2013) so we will stay in contact
We decided to table the Body Image panel/event for next year as a possibility as this spring is already looking busy. However ideas are always welcome and encouraged and we hope to put this on in the future!
Marriage Panel:
We are hoping to pull this off before Spring Break! We are looking at a lunchtime panel the week of Feb 27th, but depending on professor availabilty the event could be pushed back until after break. This is a relevant issue and we want it to happen ASAP. We are looking for about 4 professors to participate and thought a pizza lunch would help encourage attendance. We brainstormed a Maxey classroom or Jewett Main Lounge for location. Emma, Evan, Anna and Gabie will meet this week to email potentail profs and come up with guiding questions.
Same-Sex Hand Holding Day:
We decided on March 6th for this day! It is a pretty low-key event and mainly needs advertising.
We will have a chalk board on that day for people to write down their thoughts.
We will make T-Shirts on Friday March 2nd (I believe at 1pm - we'll send emails),
club funds can't buy shirts but we can buy a multi-pack of undershirts for about $4-6 each, or people can bring a shirt they already have to spray paint with stencils!
Additionally, if anyone can come up with a catchy name that encorporates "Gender" instead of "Sex," please let us know!
Everett Maroon's book:
The bookstore will be selling this once it's published (tentatively March), and Coalition is going to try to host a reading/discussion. Tentative date is April 4th or 5th.
Day of Silence:
Falls on April 20th this year. It is mostly advertising, and then we will print stickers from GLSEN. In the past people have also worn red duct tape over their mouths. We also talked about having "signs" that people wear so others in classes can read/understand what Day of Silence is. We discussed feelings on the day and the possibility of a silent lunch where people could write their feelings on posters, or some sort of "breaking the silence" end of day event (last year this fell with the "Equality is Sexy" event that FACE puts on).
Gun Hill Road Update:
We are still working on contact and Mehera will speak with Mukulu/the Library/ the possibility of a Department (i.e. Gender Studies) purchasing the film, and how all those logistics work. Once we can secure the rights to show it, we will work with getting other groups (Professors, Club Latino, etc.) on board - and hopefully have a discussion of sorts after the movie. Dates are still up in the air until we can figure out screening rights.
Today's meeting was basically just nailing down dates/confirming details and ideas for all these events.
If anyone who couldn't make it to the meeting is particularly inspired by any of these and wants to help out with planning/wants to contribute/be assigned a task, etc. please don't hesitate to contact any of the officer's!

Dragfest Updates: Luis will contact Bon Ap about having Lemonade/Water (possibly snacks)
Upcoming things:
- Day of Silence - April 20
- Spring Elections
We discussed Mehera and Emma working on outreach to GLBTQ after some thoughts/concerns raised at the town hall on Sunday, for people to join Coalition that are part of GLBTQ but are more activism-minded.
This also served as a reminder that Coalition is WHATEVER CLUB MEMBERS WANT TO MAKE OF IT.
Ideas for programs/events/things to get involved in/etc are ALWAYS WELCOME.
This led to a discussion about being more connected to other clubs and how this relates to better communications and maybe even more meeting between IC club presidents.
We are still looking into the movie Gun Hill Road - Mehera will keep us updated.
We talked about the possibility of a Body-Image panel/discussion that could potentially include groups like FACE, Greek Life, O.P. etc and any brainstorming from that is great if people can think of an event!
We are looking at doing a Marriage Panel and will get into details later - could be relevant to some IC March events.
Mehera is also going to work on staying in contact with Walla Walla University so we can continue collaborating/ supporting eachother this semester.
- Mehera is creating FB event
- Officers will meet/ set-up at 8:15pm
- Mehera & Emma will coordinate a prize for the Lip-Sync Off

DRAGFEST is fast approaching. FEBRUARY 4th in REID BALLROOM - 9 PM-MIDNIGHT
It's Coalition's biggest event of the semester - a dance where "gender bending" is encouraged.
This year's theme is MAGIC, and there will be a lip-syncing contest.
We decided we'd like to provide drinks (water/lemonade)
Mehon, Kelsey and Natasha will work on painting a poster,
Mehera is designing the fliers and Gabie and Anna will print and distribute those ASAP
We focused on what Coalition is (We are separate from GLBTQ, we are open to all students with a focus on advocay) nd discussed what we do in the Spring:
-Dragfest
-Day of Silence
-Same Sex Handholding
We then brainstormed ideas/goals:
-Talked about Washington States Gay Marriage Bill and discussed having a panel (with profs.)
-Talked about focusing on Homelessness or minorities and GLBTQ people, possibly having this tie into the movie Gun Hill Road with an accompanying discussion.
(See the movie trailer here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09zgt6-f_b4)
-We discussed having a Trans-speaker
-Talked about Girl Scouts and doing an Ad-campaign to remind people to buy cookies
-Talked about Body Image (there was an article in the Pio) and how Binarism plays into this
>This led us into a discussion about child expression, books and other media and how we could possibly come up with an event or something relating to this issue
Finally, Mehera is sending out emails and encouraged everyone to attend the "Town Hall" on Sunday
(See her emails for more info)
Lastly, a reminder that if anyone finds any news/videos/etc that they want to talk about that they should bring them to club meetings!

Thursday - January 19, 2012
New Meeting time for the semester will be Mondays at 4pm in the GAC.
We will be discussing our club goals at our next meeting!
Dragfest is on February 4th (which is coming up soon!) in Reed Ballroom from 9pm-Midnight.
The theme is MAGIC and it will be very magical!
We are working on geting lights and speakers, and if anyone has a friend who would be willing to volunteer as a D.J. for the night we would love to be in contact! (Our current prosepective D.J. is pending.)
Posters will hopefully be out early next week as well as advertising via the listserve.
We discussed doing another film screening this semester - and watched the trailer for Gun Hill Road (on youtube) a film about a transgender person of color played by a trans actor. We are unsure about costs and rights for this movie but are definitely interested.
We will be looking out to co-sponsor Equality Is Sexy with FACE - details to come.
The club is considering having meetings with more discussions based around things in the media - we talked about watching/discussing the "Second Class Citizens" clip next week.
