Updates: October 2012
Apologies for getting behind on updating this website.
October was the month of our Coming Out day tabling and panel and of Ally Week.
Debrief: Coming Out Day - the panel was an overall success. Over 40 people attended and there was a good mix of experiences but still common themes surrounding family. labels, social media, and the role of allies.
It was good when the panel was more opened up as a conversation with the audience versus a Q&A with them.
Tabling: Our rainbow buttons were quite popular (we made 100). The Coming Out "door" would probably be better on Ankeny (it wasn't super clear what it was in Reid).
Upcoming events:
Transgender Day of Remembrance - the national day is on Nov 20th (over break) so we will do an event on Tuesday Nov 13th. We discussed what this event might look like this year and will solidify ASAP. We discussed having candles, maybe pairing with FACE and other events surrounding hate crimes. We also discussed using creative forms of advertising/ educating through possible art installments or some other eye-catching displays.
Festival of Lights - this will be in early December and is put on by the Religious and Spiritual life office. We have the opportunity to have a "booth" with arts & crafts types activities. We discussed possibilities of different activities we could have (cupcakes, paper chains, etc).

We gave a summary of Jody Herman's presentation on trans statistics (see her work here:
http://www.endtransdiscrimination.org/) and briefly discussed DADT and encouraged member to attend Rob Smith's lecture titled "Closets, Combat and Coming Out."
We then briefly talked about Coming Out Day which is on October 11 this year (coming up fast!).
Attendance was not great at this meeting so we will go on more week and re-evaluate meeting time if there is still not a good showing.

Our meeting times are now officially Wednesdays at 4PM in the GAC.
We had a discussion on marriage equality this week, which included discussing an article Luis brought in that talked about Catholic bishops.
We will NOT meet next week in hopes that everyone will attend the Washington United for Marriage meeting at 4PM on Thursday to learn more about how to get involved with the fight for marriage equality in Washington State.

Welcome back to a new year!
At our first meeting we met one another and the club officers introduced themselves!
(Diana Boesch, senior, Club President - Luis Alba-Sanchez, junior, Club Vice President - Gabie Brosas, sophomore, Club Secretary & Budget Manager)
We also brainstormed event ideas and club visions for the year including:
More speakers, More collaboration with WWU, WA-High, WWCC and the community at large, recruiting more straight allies, covering a wider range of GLBTQ issues (hearing more unique stories), Having a louder presence on campus - through chalking, big posters, social media, etc., Having fundraisers, Getting involved with Referendum 74 (though this is tricky as an ASWC club)
