During this meeting, we put together all of the final details for our upcoming exhibit on queer youth suicide. We determined what the exhibit layout would look like, what would go up on the walls, etc. We also developed some discussion questions for our discussions after the exhibit.
Here's what we need from you:
If you know of any youtube videos relating to the issue of queer youth suicide, either from the It Gets Better project, the Make It Better project, the mass media, or something else, please email them to Mehera at norimm at whitman.edu
Dena will be putting together some statistics regarding issues of bullying, suicide, etc. She is looking primarily at GLSEN reports, but if you happen to know of any statistics from other sources that would be useful, email them to wesseldc at whitman.edu
If you've run across any news articles on these issues that you think would be good to display in the exhibit, email them to me at minalk at whitman.edu

September 16, 2010
Thanks to everyone who came on Thursday! We had a great meeting, filled with lots of new and exciting ideas. :)
We're hoping to get the semester kick-started with a whole bunch of events surrounding Coming Out Day in October. Coming Out Day is officially October 11, but since that's during the four day break, we're planning on celebrating that following Friday, October 15. Here are the events we're planning on putting on:
October 14 - Coming Out Day panel. We're hoping to work in conjunction with GLBTQ to find a few student panelists to talk about their experiences coming out or being out, or just their thoughts on coming out in general, etc. The panel would be open to all of campus. More details TBA. I'm going to look into venue options for this panel and hopefully be able to report back by the next meeting.
October 15 - Coming Out Day. We're thinking about putting a door (or door-like structure) on Ankeny during the day like we did last year. People will be able to run through this door and come out as whatever they want. This is a good way of raising general campus awareness of Coming Out Day. There was some discussion regarding whether or not we would do a picnic event in the afternoon like we have the last two years, though I don't believe we came to any conclusions about this.
October 16 (?) - Queer Prom. We've been having a lot of trouble regarding reserving the Reid Ballroom for Queer Prom at any point this semester, so we're thinking of switching things up a bit this year. We want to do the dance in conjunction with Coming Out Day, and we would have the theme be Debutante Ball. Since Queer Prom tends to be a smaller dance that doesn't really require the use of the Reid Ballroom, we started thinking of alternate venues that would be able to accommodate us. We're thinking of either using the GAC or an interest house/residence hall. Everybody seemed to like the idea of using the backyard of the GAC. The next step will be to contact the people in charge of these potential venues to get their thoughts. Also, someone proposed the idea of doing a prom dinner sort of thing beforehand for members of Coalition and GLBTQ. We didn't discuss this idea very much, though there was a lot of support for it.
Another idea that was proposed was to create name tags that we could pass out, on which people could write what they are coming out as (I am .....). People could come out as whatever they wanted (not necessarily just LGBTQ identities) and then wear the name tags all day. This would increase the visibility of Coming Out Day.
Other items of business:
We really want to create Coalition T-shirts (or potentially other items of clothing?) this year. At the next meeting we'll ask if there are any people who would be interested in proposing a design. So start thinking now!
We have four club members who are interested in becoming new officers! We'll be meeting early next week to talk about who will be taking on what roles, etc.
Our next meeting will be on Thursday, September 23 at 7 PM in the GAC.

I've contacted Summer Singer about potential dates for Queer Prom, and unfortunately it looks like the Reid Ballroom is already booked for all of the Friday and Saturday nights in October and November. I've asked about September and December, but if there aren't any dates available we may have to try for a Thursday night. More info on this later.
At our next meeting, we will be having elections for new officers. We are looking for first years and sophomores who are interested in taking a more active role in Coalition. You don't need to have any experience - we'll teach you everything you need to know! Mehera, Emma, and I will continue to serve as co-presidents, and new officers will serve as vice-presidents. If you're interested, let us know via email, or just simply show up at our next meeting.
We're hoping to find a meeting time that works for as many people as possible. At the meeting today, we came up with a list of four potential meeting times. These include Wednesdays at 4 PM, Wednesdays at 7 PM, Mondays at 4 PM, and Thursdays at 7 PM. If you are interested in coming to meetings, PLEASE RESPOND ASAP and let us know what times work/don't work for you.
We are going to hold a social event next Friday (the 17th) at 3 PM so that we can all get to know each other a bit. We will watch a movie (possibly But I'm a Cheerleader) and have dessert. If you'd like to help bake, meet us in the GAC around 1:30. I'll send out more emails about this as the time gets closer.
We also did some brainstorming for possible events for the semester/year. Here's a short list of what we came up with. If you have ideas and were not at the meeting, either bring them to the next meeting or send me an email. The more ideas, the better!
-Same-Sex Hand Holding Day
-Panel on being queer in the professional world
-Queer Prom
-Movie Nights
-Day of Silence
-Queer-coming (like Homecoming, only queer)
Films:
-20 Centimetros
-The Bubble
-We Were Here: Voices from the AIDS Years in San Francisco
-Venus Boyz
